WE’RE NOT AS
ACTIVE AND HEALTHY
AS WE COULD BE — AND IT SHOWS
Access to sport and recreation facilities is a vital component
of health and
wellness — essential for building healthy lives and healthy
communities.
But the truth is, our lifestyle is leading to more and more
health problems — and that costs our community in a big
way, both directly in higher health
care costs and indirectly when once-active citizens can no
longer take part
in our community.
How bad is it? Many of our kids and teens are obese and some
are being diagnosed with diseases like Type II Diabetes, which were once
thought of as “adult” issues.
Our seniors and people with handicaps lose their independence
as they lose their health. They become increasingly isolated within
our society.
WE’LL GET MOOSE JAW MOVING
AT THE MULTIPLEX
With the new Multiplex facilities, we’ll:
- Get kids off the couch and away from their video monitors
to get
active
- Encourage seniors — and make it safe and
convenient — to
get
out of the house so they can keep their health and their
independence
- Prompt all adults to get and stay fit, and
to set healthy examples
for their children
- Promote healthy lifestyles that boost
self-esteem, civic
engagement and positive behaviours
The Multiplex facilities will be a significant boost to helping
people stay
physically active in the winter months, when indoor facilities
are essential
for many Moose Jaw residents. This builds on the Five Hills
Health Region
primary health care initiatives.

THERE’S MORE TO SPORT AND
RECREATION THAN PLAYING AROUND
Getting active and getting fit does far more than contribute
to good health.
For kids and youth in particular, taking part in sports and
recreation has
also been proven to:
- Boost kids’ academic performance
- Instill skills that will
be essential in future careers, such as leadership, teamwork, decision-making
and cooperation
- Help steer kids away from crime by encouraging positive
behaviours
- Create strong, community-minded individuals who are
more
likely to be actively engaged in activities that advance and
promote
Moose Jaw
“There is strong agreement across the country that community
sport
is one of the most positive forces in the lives of young people
today,
even more than school, friends and peers, religion and the
music/
entertainment industry.”

ACTIVITIES AND OPPORTUNITIES FOR
EVERYONE AT THE MULTIPLEX
SAt the Multiplex, children, youth, families, adults and
seniors will be able to
give their health a boost by:
- Enrolling in year-round league sports
- Participating in tournaments
and bonspiels that bring together
people from across Western Canada and beyond for friendly
sporting events
- Taking part in drop-in fitness activities
- Signing up for a fitness
program
- Walking on the indoor walking track
The Multiplex is essential for dedicated athletes — kids,
teens and young
people who need access to top-quality facilities to take their
skills to a
higher level, potentially to compete at the provincial or national
levels.
